Welcome to the Museum of Ethnography.
The
Museum has been created for some years (since 1994) on the initiative of the
principal of the lyceum Hanna Sazonenko.
It must be acknowledged that since lyceum
foundation the ethnographical aspect and Ukrainian studies have always been a
matter of a special concern for being one of the most unique and inexhaustible
sources of the Ukraine national culture identity.
Proceeding from this obvious fact the creation of
the museum has been entailed by certain directions.
The first one - it concentrates on representing
life style of the Ukrainian people particularly of specific elements
characterizing the Ukrainian dwelling of the past (“hata”) and its
utensils, namely pryadka, makohin, rubel, kachalka for ironing linen,
skrynya typical of different regions of Ukraine as well as a remarkable
collection of festive and casual folk attire which the people in country areas (
especially in western parts) still wear.
The pride of our museum is the icon of the
Virgin and the Saviour painted in the 19th century in the Cherkassy region.
Petrivka painting layouts can be found here
being fine examples of this unique school of traditional painting on wood, metal
and paper typical of the Dnipropetrivsk region.
The second direction of our work is students’
ethnographical practice.
The students made a tangible contribution to the
museum, having recorded a great number of legends, tales, folk songs and
reminiscences of the ordinary people of their life experience.
After such trips the museum is usually
added with new exhibits like the towels from Sumy, Vinitsa, Ternopil, Chernihiv,
Khmelnytsky, Zakarpattia. The embroidered towel (pattern in satin-stitch or
crossing) is regarded as a abiding talisman for our people to be used in nearly
all the ritual ceremonies from birth to death. It is just towels that give the
nation colour and solemnity to our museum.
On first entering the Museum unforgettable words
of the famous Ukrainian master of ceramic mini-sculpture Ivan Honchar are
occurred to: “A magic soul of our great and ancient people, its striving for the
independence and aspiration, poetry, skills and everlasting identity being felt
in this priceless destiny are in front of you”.
Thus you’re offered to feel the spirit and
diversity of our country, the scent of ancient Kyiv and Volyn, exotic
Hutsulschina, picturesque Poltavschina, unique Podil and fabulous
Chernihivschina.
he Third direction that should be mentioned is
aimed at students’ creative realization. The Museum is vested to be the
Ukrainian studies centre and it’s committed to broadening students’ minds
culturally as well academically. It’s a resource of inspiration for everyone:
whatever their interest or knowledge level: students, parents, teachers,
visitors from abroad or local ones. Thus a great quantity of exhibits and
collections provide general background understanding as well as in-depth
accounts of the history of Ukraine.
This display is on the open access shelves and
panels arranged by subjects using the classification system. The museum thanks
the benefactors whose donation made both the recent restoration of the museum
and its development as well. We believe that the main goal of creation of the
Museum of Ethnography has been realized.
It was certified by the Kyiv Administration and
the Central Department of Education in December 1998.
